Slane Castle is well-known for the rock concerts that are held here on an almost annual basis. It is also a venue for wedding celebrations, corporate events and it is open to the public during the tourist season for guided tours.
Home to the Conyngham family since 1701, the current building is thought to stand on the site of the earlier de Fleming stone castle, constructed in the late 12th century following their move from the original castle on the Hill of Slane. The current castle was remodelled in 1785 by James Gandon, James Wyatt and Francis Johnson. The Conynghams were responsible for the design and layout of Slane village in its present form and work on this project began in the 1760s.
